Celebrating the most intense music in the world pulled from a variety of eras, genres and performance styles.
Sturm & Klang is the newest edition of the “Drone Activity” series, celebrating the most intense music in the world. A gargantuan lineup of artists representing the extreme edges of jazz, noise and metal will present their varied experiments in and engagement with sound. Performers will include the free jazz trio of German saxophonist Peter Brötzmann, pedal steel guitarist Heather Leigh and Japanese free improvisation pioneer Sabu Toyozumi on erhu; New York City’s PHARMAKON whose abrasive and sinister sounds have established her in the city’s underground scene; Kevin Richard Martin AKA The Bug presenting Sirens, an arrhythmic and immersive sound installation; the collaborative duo of Swiss-American jazz composer Erika Stucky and German industrial artist FM Einheit; Hugo Esquinca AKA DEKJ, a Mexican sound artist and founding member of Berlin’s oqko collective; NPVR, a new project from Editions Mego boss Peter Rehberg and Nik Void of Factory Floor; Lebanese electronic artist Rabih Beaini live alongside Swedish experimental singer Sofia Jernberg and Hungarian drummer Balázs Pándi; Berlin’s modular sound explorer, Rachel Lyn; Tehran-based electronic music composer and sound artist Sote; and atmospheric black metal duo Sun Worship. These heavy-hitters will be joined by Academy participants Mess_Montage, the Georgian producer of layered melancholic electronic instrumentals and MORPSIS, who hails from India and creates ambient soundscapes that draw from musique concrète and field recordings. An event first introduced as part of the Red Bull Music Academy 2013 in New York, this night is sure to shake the body as much as the brain.
