If there's something that has nothing to do with him and his music, it's "crossover", a word that suggests something meets something. With Kai Schumacher, nothing meets nothing because everything is always there. The more different, the more familiar. He plays solo piano – no electronic additions, no overdubs, no loops, no drum machine. Everything is open on the table.
As an artist with a focus on contemporary American piano music, Kai Schumacher has released several albums since 2009 with works by Frederic Rzewski, John Cage, George Crumb, Steve Reich and others
On his album “Rausch” (2019) the focus was on his own compositions for the first time. For this purpose, he has prepared his instrument analogously and uses the “weird” tones of the piano to play with acoustic perception. His upcoming album “Tranceformer” (release September 29, 2023) now continues this game on a different level - the music remains in constant transformation and develops its temporary form in the subjective ears of the listener.
Together with the singer-songwriter Gisbert zu Knyphausen, Kai Schmacher released the album “Let crazy dogs howl” in 2021, on which the two songs are reinterpreted by Franz Schubert with a chamber ensemble: without classic etiquette, tailcoats and pocket squares, but with authentic honesty and fire hearts. Schumacher is currently also on stage with the “SIGNUM Saxophone Quartet”: their program “Goldberg Nights” combines Bach’s Goldberg Variations with other night music from four centuries, from otherworldly romantic dreamscapes to ecstatic club nights.
