One Day For Fela 2023 | Open Air @ YAAM Berlin

26 years after the death of musician and political activist Fela Kuti, YAAM dedicates a day to the Afrobeat trailblazer. "One Day For Fela!" on the banks of the Spree. Get ready for a great line up on 3 floors finished by a cozy indoor aftershow party full of polyrhythm!

Fela Kuti was far more than just a musician - he was a true freedom fighter and champion of social justice. His music was the soundtrack of resistance to oppression and injustice. With his distinctive mix of African tradition, funk and jazz, Fela Kuti created a revolutionary musical fusion that changed the world.

To date, Fela has influenced an entire generation of musicians, producers, DJs and, last but not least, political activists. In addition to countless bands all over the world who have dedicated themselves to Afrobeat, numerous top stars are also very familiar with Fela Kuti's legacy. Songs by musicians such as Burna Boy, Wyclef Jean or De La Soul work with samples, text passages or the classic Afrobeat rhythms from the repertoire of the "Master of Afrobeat" Fela Kuti.

Ekowmania & The RHYTHMERS (live)
The formation The RHYTHMERS is a jewel of the much too small Berlin scene for West African music from the sixties. Ekow Alabi Savage (GH), singer and drummer for the Rhythmers, was born in 1957 in Cape Coast. He has already played with Fela Kuti's guitarist Oghene Kologbo and other highlife legends. Together with Gbemu Kwame Sometimer (GH), bass and vocals, and Frank Karikari (GH), guitar and vocals, Ekow brings Ghanaian Afro-Highlife to the stage on Saturday, i.e. a fusion of local sounds from Ghana with jazz, R&B and international pop . The quintet is complemented by Nick Morrison (USA/FRA) on lead guitar and Kölner Rocco (GER) on percussions.

Sonic Interventions (live)
Sonic Interventions is a Berlin diaspora-futuristic band of international female artists from five continents. Emerging from the transcultural jazz scene in Berlin in 2020, the collective combines various languages, instruments and rhythms in joint improvisation, meditation and groove. They integrate traditional musical elements of the global south with futuristic sounds and urban styles like hip hop, trap and house, always in the service of spontaneous creation and collective elevation.
