When the first AIDS deaths began 40 years ago, it became apparent that drug users, sex workers and men who had sex with men were particularly vulnerable to this new disease. Gays became the epitome of this disease, and a social hunt shaped the lives of gays in the 1980s. In the midst of this defensive struggle against stigmatization, exclusion and hostility, the death of friends and lovers was part of the everyday life of an entire generation. "One of the paradoxes (...) will be that AIDS will promote the integration of homosexuals into society." This is what Martin Dannecker wrote prophetically in 1986. HIV / AIDS should change the world permanently. Gay and queer ways of life affected and still affect it today.
Together with Martin Dannecker, co-founder of the West German gay movement and sexologist, and Inge Banczyk, nurse and board member of the Berlin Aids Aid, we will talk about the importance of the so-called AIDS crisis for the queer movement.
