The British musician Kamaal Williams can safely be described as a musical border crosser. Under his alias Henry Wu he published on Motor City Drum Ensembles label MCDE, Eglo and Rhythm Section International of HipHop and Jazz informed house and broken beat, was co-founder of the group Yussef Kamaal, for which he together with the drummer Yussef Dayes the 70s jazz -Funk and contemporary jungle, trip hop and house changing album Black Focus, which was released on Gilles Peterson's Brownswood label, is generally influenced by jazz approaches à la Herbie Hancock, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Thelonious Monk or Kaidi Tatham. Most recently, Kamaal Williams released his solo album The Return on Black Focus Records - today he plays with his own band (Pete Martin and MckNasty) in more electronic settings, but repeatedly lets references to jazz, blues, funk and soul resonate. The evening will be opened by Torben Unit and a musical group improvisation. Formerly the Max Graef Band, the musical creative field of the Berlin musicians is quickly explained - with Torben Unit, funky basslines and driving grooves hover somewhere between jazz radio and jazz rock.
